How to connect with Java Edition
- Open the Minecraft Launcher on a Windows, Mac or Linux computer and choose Java Edition.
- Sign in with the player's own account. Each player needs their own paid Java Edition account.
- Start the game and choose Multiplayer.
- Choose Add Server. Type the server address from your payment confirmation page or welcome email.
- Choose Done, select the server in the list and choose Join Server.

The game will not let a child play online. Child accounts have online play settings that an adult controls through Microsoft's family settings. Minecraft's own help pages at minecraft.net/help explain the current steps, because Microsoft changes them from time to time.
Wrong version. Minecraft Java Edition updates often. If the game says the server is on a different version, start the launcher and let it update, or check that the launcher is set to the latest release.
